The question I have been asked most often since I was permitted to examine
the Columbia Archives of Bob Dylan's recordings, is: How many takes did
Dylan record of Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands? This was one of the questions I had to find an answer to, being back in
the Sony Archives in Manhattan a few weeks ago. I knew that going through
Bob Dylan's recordings from Columbia's Nashville studios would be pretty
difficult. In the New York studios there was a tradition for keeping the
records and files complete and up to date, which made the material reasonably
straightforward to work with (This, however, does not mean that the article
in the last issue of "The Telegraph" was free from mistakes. I am sure everyone
was surprised to discover that Dylan had apparently recorded Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie during the Another Side Of Bob Dylan session and that Ballad In Plain D was apparently never recorded. As you might have guessed, CO 82217 is actually Ballad In Plain D, which error I meant to correct but, under pressure of deadlines, I forgot.
There are a number of other mistakes and clarifications, which will all
be corrected in one addenum [sic] at the end of this series of articles).
There are several problems connected to the period 1968-'71. The Recording
Diaries for 1969-'71 for the Nashville Studios are missing, as well as for
January 1967 to December 1970 for the New York studios. Therefore it is
impossible to start with a list of jobs and then track down the tapes and
recording sheets.
For this reason, the sources to define each recording job vary in each case:
The CO-cards (small cards, one for each CO-number, usually with information
about song title, recording date and job number) are a valuable source,
but contrary to what was routine in New York - namely that each recorded
song got a CO-number, no matter if it was released or not - it was custom
and practice in Nashville (and, indeed, it would become so from 1970 in
New York) only to give a CO-number to songs which were released or used
for further overdubbing etc. This means that sessions which didn't produce
any released songs, would not show up at all on the CO-cards.
The Columbia Artist Cards are not of much help either, because from 1968
and on they only list songs which were released.
On the other hand, the musicians' contracts have been extremely helpful.
They cover every session where musicians were paid to play and very often
give information about the song titles which were recorded.
But being able to identify all the jobs does not put an end to the problems:
Unfortunately, it has turned out that many tapes are missing or not easy
to locate. During my recent trip to the Sony Archives I therefore spent
most of the time trying to track down the different session tapes from Nashville.
This work has not been fully completed, so there are still sessions that
should have been listed here for which a full track list cannot yet be presented.
Hopefully, these holes will be filled up later.
Furthermore, in many cases the session tapes do not contain recording sheets;
that means: the tape is there, but noone [sic] knows what is on it. To solve
this problem I was kindly allowed to listen to these tapes. For technical
reasons (the tapes were recorded in many different formats, each requiring
its own machine to play back) it was not possible to go through all the
tapes in question this time. Once again, if things go to plan, these omissions
will also be dealt with later.
In the last article I stated that most of Blonde On Blonde was recorded in 8-track in Nashville. It now appears that this is probably
not true. The first album for which there are session tapes in 8-track is John Wesley Harding. All existing tapes from the Blonde On Blonde sessions are 4-track.
So, in February and March 1966, Bob Dylan would conclude the recording of Blonde On Blonde during two sets of sessions. For the first one in February, all the details
are available:

There have been rumours of a September 1967 session prior to the actual recording of John Wesley Harding. There are no session dates in Bob Dylan's name in the Nashville log books

Moving on to Nashville Skyline is moving on to problems. The Johnny Cash session tapes are stored in the

is stored in California it was not possible to examine it this time. Most

As previously known, George Harrison celebrated the fact that he was again permitted entry into the USA (after
having been banned with the other Beatles because they smoked grass - which,
by the way, they had been introduced to by . . . Bob Dylan) by visiting
Bob Dylan and joining him for a session in New York. The material for New Morning was beginning to be shaped:

Following these basic recording sessions, a number of overdub sessions took place. As it has been told by Al Kooper,
there was some disagreement between Bob Dylan and Al Kooper about the production
and arrangement of New Morning. A lot of mixing and overdubbing was done during July 1970. Probably as
a result of that. several early versions of New Morning exist. One is simply labeled "Al's Mix" and has the following tracklisting:
Side l: The Man In Me / Winterlude / Maryanne / One More Weekend.
Side 2: Mr. Bojangles / Tomorrow's A Long Time / Three Angels / Ballad
Of Ira Hayes / If Dogs Run Free.
In late June, however, there was a real recording session. about which not
much is known:

5, 8 and 20 released on New Morning.
Why on earth, a couple of months after the release of New Morning on October 21, a Dylan recording session is slated - even. perhaps an overdub
session - is not known. No tapes or recording sheets are availab1e, and
the session might actually never have happened. It could possibly have been
entered as a hypothetical session. if they had forgotten to pay Antonio
M. Sales for an earlier session.

To complete the confusion, the songs on New Morning were finally given new CO-numbers in connection with the release of the
album. So the official CO-numbers (which therefore do not refer to the recording
session but to the released tape) are as follows:
If Not For You CO107469
Day Of The Locusts CO107470
Time Passes Slowly CO107471
Went To See The Gypsy CO107472
Winterlude CO107473
If Dogs Run Free CO107474
New Morning CO107475
Sign On The Window CO107476
One More Weekend CO107477
The Man In Me CO107478
Three Angels CO107479
Father Of Night CO107480
Bob Dylan's work in 1971 was very inspired. Leon Russell has described the sessions in Blue Rock
Studios as very dynamic and positive. But confusion prevails when it comes
to this session. The session dates are documented by bills for studio time.
But only two tapes have so far been located: one 8-track master and one
16-track master. They are labelled April 21, 1971, but this was probably
the date when Watching The River Flow was pulled for single release. In addition, no track sheets are available.
So far it has only been possible to listen through one of the two tapes,
and apparently at least one more session tape was recorded.

12. Watching The River Flow CO110814
Track 1 - 11 labelled "Job 76895" on tape box, but that probably refers
to Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2. The higher CO number for When I Paint My Masterpiece is probably a consequence of that song being pulled from the session tapes
at a later occasion than Watching The River Flow.
12 released as single.
Listing is incomplete as only reel 2 of at least three reels has been listened
through.
Personally I was very happy to find all the tapes Dylan recorded with Happy Traum in September. as I like this
session very much.

In return for David Bromberg's involvement on Self Portrait and New Morning, Dylan played harmonica on one song on Bromberg's upcoming album. It was
actually a re-recording, as Bromberg had already recorded it for the album
without Dylan.

released track is take 11.

That's all for this time. Now that you know that there are three complete takes of Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands, you're probably beginning to wonder how many versions Bob Dylan did of Joey. This and much more is the subject for the third article in this series
next time.
